Difference between resistance furnace and muffle furnace

Muffle furnace is the English translation of "Muffle furnace", usually refers to high-temperature box-type resistance furnace, a special design of the resistance furnace, characterized by the sample and the heating element is isolated, with a closed box structure, usually through the refractory material surrounded by the heating chamber, to avoid contamination or oxidation. The chamber is usually made of refractory material (e.g. ceramic fiber) with insulation and sealing, suitable for high temperature and uniform heating, mostly used in laboratories (e.g. ash determination, heat treatment), where precise temperature control is required and samples are not required to be contaminated.

Muffle furnace belongs to a kind of resistance furnace, but resistance furnace is not necessarily muffle furnace.

Resistance furnaces have a much wider range, including industrial melting, drying, etc., and may be directly exposed to the heating environment. For example, tube resistance furnaces and cart resistance furnaces do not have the closed chamber characteristics of muffle furnaces.
